Mark Jenkinson has been the MP for Workington since 2019, gaining the seat from Labour. Previously won by Labour at every general election since WW1, the concept of ‘Workington man’ came to symbolise the 2019 General Election. With 61% of the electorate having voted for Brexit in the EU referendum, this seat was gained by the Conservatives along many others across the red wall.
Born in 1982 in Workington, Mark is a self-described ‘working class’ Tory. Before politics Mark was a nuclear technical author having undertaken an eleccal engineering apprenticeship with British Steel. Mark is a supporter of the plans to construct a new coking coal mine on the west Cumbrian coast. He is married with four children and his spare time when not ‘doing politics’ is spent standing on the sidelines of his children’s football matches and training sessions!
Mark is a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on Fuel Poverty, Hydrogen, Marine Energy, the Northern Powerhouse, Nuclear Energy, and the Wood Panel Industry. Mark is focused on young people’s education & most recently had a private member’s bill progress to the Lords to introduce legislation that would guarantee careers advice to pupils from age of 11 in schools. The new measures would be a fundamental change in the way pupils are prepared for the world of work. Most recently Mark was promoted to the new role of parliamentary private secretary for the Department of Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra).
